'As Seen On TV'

I only have to see that cheery red sign  and I'm instantly drawn. I'm always fascinated by the moral question. Does it really do all the things it says it does? Hmmm if it didn't would they really have the courage to put it on TV like that? I mean ...a big fat lie in front of soo many people. I'm always inclined to think not, which is why I always go for things that have that reassuring tag. Of course that obviously means I have seen it on TV and assessed it myself, but even if I haven't there is a subliminal thought that loads of others have.

Last week I couldn't resist any longer, determined to buy all the things we have been bombarded with from Glomail on DSTV, I had my list; the Abs roller- a contraption that helps you do sit ups by assisting you to roll up and down,(looked pretty good);the perfectpedi, (an all in one home pedicure kit) and the Jumpstart juicer a seven day weight loss programme). I called B my professional shopping buddy and we went off to Game, one of the many department stores listed as stockists, praying fervently that the Nigerian Game would be included. If you're reading this and you're not Nigerian you can never really understand the frustration. Most advertised goods can't be bought directly from here so you are left to yearn and pine away endlessly without hopes of satisfaction. so you can imagine my delirious joy when we spied yaay!!!

- the jump start 'mean juice Machine...with the red label 'As seen on TV' Check!
- then we saw  the 'perfect pedi'(the cousin of the pedi egg), check!

The only hold out was the abs roller thingy, apparently that was sold out. But hey 2 out of three wasn't bad at all. I was well pleased.

Couldn't wait to get home to try them out. That's the joy of shopping. You get the immediate thrill of the purchase and then you get another, actually using the item...err...or not! In this case it was thumbs up all the way! The perfect pedi was just brilliant. Everything you see it do on TV is exactly what it does. It's just sooo amazing. It's so gentle. I mean my feet aren't really the worse for wear,( we're not talking about farmers feet here), I do a pedicure every 3-4 weeks and I don't walk a whole lot, but even at that I get a few rough edges here and there and the lighter abrasive attachment gently smoothed it away. I didn't expect to find anything in the tray, but when I opend the tray I was amazed to find a fair amount of light shavings. I don't know about its famous competitor pedegg but with my Perfectpedi I got a bonus manicure set.I have to tell you this was equally pleasing. It was a cordless power tool with 5 attachments that file, shape, sculpture and polish. If you're manically obsessed with your nails like I am (in a nailbiting sort of way), you'll find this 'free' bonus item invaluable. This battery operated tool really is the icing on the cake luv it luv, it,LUV IT!!!!

A day later I opened the juicer. Packed together with it was surprise; surprise; an impressive looking hard back book titled, Jump Start: 7 day weight Loss Program. A smaller sub heading in bold type said, Change your Body in only 7 Days. Now that was really interesting even though the before and after pics weren't too convincing (the after photos just looked like they were sucking in their bellies), I was hooked.

There was a full length picture of Brendan McArthy, health and fitness expert, the author, folded arms, legs akimbo grinning back at me with confidence urging me on. I couldn't wait to get started The promise was that we would lose at least 5kg, be detoxed, feel healthier, rejuvinated and have more time on our hands (presumably from less cooking)...all in 7 days. How easy is that???

I set off early next morning with my laundry list of ingredients determined to follow the regime to the letter. The first shocker was 91 CARROTS!!!!! yes 91. Apparently many of the blends required 4-5 carrots like 3 times a day. Another shocker was ingredients like peaches (5) not cheap, asparagus (13) even more expensive, 17 Apples, 14 pears, beetroot, 28 celery stalks, canteloup, honey dew melon, watermelon...the list was endless and frankly quite annoying, not to talk of EXPENSIVe aiyeesh!Anyway udeterred despite the extreme provocation I pressed on.

Day 1 Breakfast was called Loupe-De-Loupe 1/2 a canteloup juiced - delicious! and the natural sugar gave me an instant boost. Mid morning snack "CAPP"isce 5 carrots 1 Apple,2 Pears, a handful of parsley, wasn't too shabby either. Lunch was Ginger Rogers a combination of Canteloup carrots and ginger, another mid afternoon snack of "CAPP"isce and then Dinner which was called Body Armour 1 Apple 5 carrots 1cm cube of ginger.

By the end of the first day I was feeling good, a bit hungry but good. I struggled through day 2. Day 3 started with something called Medicinal melon. this was a 1/3 of a small water melon juiced - It was ok, nothing special, (I'm not too keen on water melons...boring!). Mid morning snack was Peachy Keen a blend of 1 peach, 4 carrots, 1cm of ginger juiced - Absolutely delicious! and Lunch was something called The Royal Flush a fantastic detox blend of watermelon, beetroot, parsley and cucumber.Afternoon snack was Instant Karma and dinner was The Regulator. By now after 3 days of juicing I was feeling totally detoxed, so much so that I was able to think clearly, enough to recognize that I hadn't eaten anything solid for 3 days and IF YOU DON'T EAT FOOD you WILL LOSE WEIGHT Duh! So after that Aha! moment I stopped.

To tell you the truth I'm not too good with regimes, I like to pick and choose and some of the other days juices looked much more fun. Browsing through the booklet, Fountain of Youth Lunch of day 4 captured my attention immediately as did Dinner, Toxic Avenger (I'd like to give this to a few of my 'friends') 5 Asparagus sticks, 3 carrots, 2 celery sticks and 1 cucumber and many more infinitely more interesting combinations...

Did I lose any weight? yeah a bit. But I guess you can get the same results cheaper by just not eating and drinking water! But juicing is a much healthier alternative and far more invigorating.

Was the juicer worth it? Absolutely!!! I actually hadn't intended it for weight loss purposes, that was just a greedy incentive,(you know we women can never pass an opportunity to try a diet even if we don't need it...gives bragging rights), my main goal was to use it to achieve a healthier lifestyle plateau you know, something like exercise+juicing+balanced diet+plenty of laughter+Love = Happiness. My goal this year was to work on the first part of the equation and optimise my health and strength. The juicer is certainly helping me achieve that goal. !

Downing a glass of  "CAPP"isce (5 carrots+1 Apples+2 pears+ Parsley) first thing in the morning is a truly amazing jumpstart to the day. After only two weeks, my daughter who'se never EVER  generous with her praise tells me I look 10 years younger all fresh and dewy. I think it's all the raw vitamin A from the carrots and other raw vitamins you know from the beetroots, asparagus etc.

So all in all I was happy with the Perfectpedi and happy with Jumpstart start juicer but not so happy with the price. 'As seen on TV' set me back a cool N30,000. Do the math ouch!

Happiness is expensive but hey don't groan and switch off just yet. There is a solution. If you love to try all those fun Glomail stuff send us an email with 3 items you've been dying to have then. If enough people want it then you might be in luck to get it a fraction of the price...just watch this space
