Is it the gift or the thought that counts?

We all want gifts, who doesn’t? But is a gift a gift? a gift? How do you feel when you spend a lot on somebody and they don’t spend a lot on you? Is it really the thought that counts?

Gift giving has become such a minefield, so much psycho agro. For instance when you give a gift, should you include a receipt? The ‘new’ etiquette says Yes!  but personally we think that’s tacky. Leaving the receipt inside the packaging is like advertising how much you spent…not very gracious...

Of course leaving the receipt allows you to exchange the gift, but really must you? What happened to the grin and bear it philosophy? After all a gift is not just about the gift, but also about the time, effort and care taken to search for the gift, it is the embodiment of the hopes and desires the giver has for the recipient.

We do know that not every gift is exactly what we would hope for but would you tell that to the givers face? No I didn’t think so! But when you exchange a gift for something else or worse still return it for a refund that’s exactly what you’re doing.

But in saying that I'm not letting bad gifters off the hook...really inexcusable. Hopes and expectations dashed simply because the giver did not put enough thought.

A good gift should be a reflection of the recipient’s tastes not yours. When buying gifts for men, women should try to suppress their more feminine instincts and buy gifts that appeal more to the male ego, something expensive and large. The grand gesture is always appreciated.

A plea to all men reading this – Try to buy what your partner likes, as in you-have-seen-her wear, use, admire…something-of-that-nature before! A friend renowned for her phenomenally good taste once resentfully showed me a clunky metallic looking watch that her husband had bought her, which, if she had not taken the trouble to show me the label, I would have assumed to be a digital Seiko watch purchased under the bridge, rather than the Baum & Mercier watch that it was. Particularly painful to her was the fact that Baum & Mercier has a well known reputation for fine elegant designs, so how come he had to choose the chunkiest design in the collection?

Well isn’t it the thought that counts? Yes indeed it is the thought that counts which is why we think you need to think carefully about that thought.
